Tackling Japan’s IT Talent Shortage: Insights from Scriptide at Japan IT Week 2024
Following our participation in CEATEC 2024, Scriptide was honored to attend Japan IT Week from October 23-25 at Makuhari Messe. This event, Japan’s largest IT and Digital Transformation (DX) exhibition, brought together innovators and industry leaders to address pressing issues in the tech sector. One of the most significant topics of discussion this year was Japan’s IT talent shortage, a critical issue that our CEO, Daniel Fazekas, addressed in his presentation: “Facing the IT Talent Shortage Crisis in Japan – Challenges and Solutions.”

Why Japan’s IT Talent Shortage is Critical
Japan’s tech industry is rapidly advancing, with increased demand for software solutions to drive digital transformation. However, this growth is being hindered by a shortage of skilled IT professionals, particularly in software development. In 2024 alone, the market is short by around 350,000 software developers—a figure expected to reach 450,000 by 2030. The hiring process for technical roles is also lengthy, taking an average of 5.5 months to fill these positions, and nearly half of these hires ultimately prove to be a less-than-ideal fit for the role.
This shortage affects not only the tech sector but Japan’s competitiveness on a global scale. For the first time, Japan has dropped to 32nd in the IMD World Digital Competitiveness Ranking, highlighting the impact of these hiring gaps on the country’s digital economy.
Daniel Fazekas’s Insights: Challenges and Solutions
During his presentation, Daniel emphasized the need for innovative solutions to address this shortage. One such approach is Team Augmentation, which allows Japanese companies to integrate foreign IT talent into their teams on a project basis rather than as permanent hires. This model has proven effective for Scriptide, especially when working with Japanese clients who appreciate the flexibility and cultural exchange it fosters. Our experiences show that a blended team structure with both Japanese and foreign professionals can be highly effective, especially when facilitated by a “bridge person”—a project manager or developer who helps navigate language and cultural differences. This individual, fluent in both languages and well-versed in cultural nuances, serves as a liaison to align team members on project goals and expectations. By fostering a collaborative environment, the Bridge Person helps overcome language barriers and enhance the project’s overall efficiency.
Japan IT Week: A Hub for Digital Transformation
Japan IT Week provided a dynamic platform to explore these topics and discuss real solutions with Japanese and international industry leaders. The scale of the event was impressive, with countless exhibitors showcasing tools and strategies to support digital transformation. Visitors at our booth were highly engaged, sharing insights on the challenges they face in adapting to rapid technological changes and the urgent need for skilled talent.
Moving Forward
Attending Japan IT Week gave us a clearer understanding of how Scriptide can support Japanese businesses in addressing their talent needs. The event highlighted the challenges but also the many opportunities for collaboration and mutual growth. By bridging talent gaps with solutions like Team Augmentation, we aim to help Japanese companies achieve their digital transformation goals while contributing positively to the tech landscape in Japan.

Germany and Japan: Different Approaches to Global IT Talent
In an era defined by rapid digital transformation and aging populations, advanced economies are increasingly competing for highly skilled technology professionals. Germany and Japan, two of the world’s leading industrial nations, face similar pressures: shrinking workforces alongside growing demand for digital expertise across nearly every sector. Both countries are among the top four economies globally by nominal GDP, with Germany recently surpassing Japan to claim third place. This comparison is therefore not only relevant in terms of economic scale, but also in terms of influence over global innovation and technology markets. While both nations recognize that attracting international IT talent is essential for sustaining economic growth, their approaches differ in structure, emphasis, and underlying philosophy.
